Pep Talk #17: Love Thy Neighbor.
I have seen in the past few days again people rallying around one another over the displacement of their homes, farms, animals, businesses from these wildfires. When we love our neighbors and know them well, we can show up for them in incredible ways. And this isn’t just neighbors in the houses next door. This can be extended to your workroom neighbor, your protest rally neighbor, your daycare person neighbor, bodega shop neighbor. And given a compassionate heart, (and this one may come with challenges), the neighbors who vote differently from you, the neighbors who are prickly or negative often, the neighbors who are not always kind. Easy to love those who are just like us. But when we step out and take a risk, getting to know our neighbor, and listen and see where they are coming from- we might find some common ground. We all desire connection and we all need to be found in love. Who are your neighbors? How are you showing up for them? What does it look like to be for someone who isn’t like you/doesn’t think like you/doesn’t agree with you? Today I had to remind myself that I am right where I need to be. That going for a jog, picking up my guitar, baking cookies, visiting a yard sale, saying hello to my neighbors, it was all meaningful. Just because it doesn’t seem EPIC, doesn’t mean it was not making an impact. Some days we have to step out of our comfort zone and other days we need to press into our daily rhythms. No really, you were made for this day, for this body we have been given. Found myself this afternoon feeling lousy about this vessel I am in.
